Most automakers have supported the White House’s proposed fuel efficiency rules , which would require cars to get 53 percent better fuel economy by 2025. Although that seems like it would require more hybrids and EVs, Automotive News reports that gasoline engines will continue to improved upon to achieve new rules. “Automakers will meet the standards by improving technology on the road today,” said Brendan Bell of the Clean Vehicles Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists .
